But The LORD Delivers
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken. Psalm 34:17-20
And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. Luke 7:21
Through Job’s testing and trial we know that afflictions come from Satan who is jealous of God’s righteous people and not from God! Job was wealthy, famous and respected (with the power and influence that go with it) had a large family to care for him in old age and he stood right before God (He worshipped God in spirit and truth and dealt fairly in business. He cared for the widow and orphan and helped his neighbor in need.) Truly this man was rich in every way that mattered.
We find in Job 1: 4 that Job’s children were close to one another and often dined together. Through all the activities of his children he closely monitored them and cared for them and performed worship that they could not for themselves. He was careful that his children be right before God. In every way we find in Job an exemplary and exceptional life. In word and deed he was right before God. In his finances he was stable yet he was no stingy man. The tragedy that came suddenly was a shock to everyone he knew.
Satan had accused God of placing a “hedge” (of blessing) around Job so that Job can’t help but praise and honor God. He told God to remove all of these blessings and Job would curse God. It’s to be noted that Satan had to ask for God’s permission before unleashing his sorties of afflictions against Job because God’s predisposition toward his children is to bless and protect. And God gave Satan permission to go ahead and test Job in the way that Satan desired with one restriction: Satan was not allowed to touch Job’s person in any way. However, everything else that Job had, God placed in Satan’s hand to do as Satan desired.
Satan using people, the Sabeans, they raided Job’s oxen and donkeys and took them away and killed the servants with the edge of the sword. And using supernatural elements Satan caused a fire to fall from heaven and burn up the sheep and the servants, and consume them. And then he used the Chaldeans who raided the camels and took them away and killed the servants with the edge of the sword. And finally Satan caused a great wind to come from across the wilderness and strike the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died including all of Job’s children. The bible tells us:
Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong. Job 1:20-22
Later Satan unleashed his second terrible sortie against Job. He afflicted Job with a terrible disease. From the various descriptions of Job’s condition in the book (Job 2:8; 7:4-5; 13:14; 13:28; 16:16; 16:8; 17:1; 19:20; 19:26; 30:17; 30:30), it has been strongly suggested that this was not “boils” as the Authorized Version renders it, but rather a case of Black Leprosy. The disease produces swelling in the limbs, itching, flaking of the skin, a change in color of the skin and intense pain. Those who have it are described as appearing like Elephants or Lions; hence another name for the disease is Elephantiasis or Leontiasis. We know that this disease changed Job’s physical appearance because his friends were not able to recognize him (Job 2:12). Not a single part of Job’s body was unaffected by this disease. Not a single part of him could find rest from this disease (Job 3:26; 30:17).
Job then took a piece of broken pottery (also acting as an instrument for scratching), to scrape away the epidermal remnants of the diseased and infected skin. Job 7:5 describes the condition as a continual cycle of the skins decay, hardening, and then breaking out once again. Sitting in ashes was a common method of mourning whether for others or for one’s self (see 2 Samuel 13:9; Ezekiel 27:30; Jonah 3:6).
And in Job 2:9-10 – Job’s wife entered the picture and did a little work for Satan. Instead of offering comforts to her husband as a good wife would do, she questioned whether he ought to remain faithful and suggest that he simply “curse God and die” instead of enduring through such grief. This, of course, was exactly what Satan wanted Job to do (1:11) and we know that even unwitting people are often tools of Satan’s evil.
Her question was in regard to Job’s integrity, particularly, the statement that Job had made in 1:21, “blessed be the name of the Lord.” Evidently Job’s wife doesn’t believe that after this second round of affliction that Job need hold fast to such a statement. Her conclusion was that Job should simply curse God and then die.
But in spite of everything Job held on to his faith in God and he was not disappointed or put to shame! The Word of God tells us about Satan, "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (John 10:10). In the life of Job we clearly saw that it was Satan- the devil who caused Job his afflictions including great financial losses and physical sickness. But it was the Lord who healed, delivered, blessed and prospered him and made his end better than his beginning. God’s word is true:
And the LORD restored Job's losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. Then all his brothers, all his sisters, and all those who had been his acquaintances before, came to him and ate food with him in his house; and they consoled him and comforted him for all the adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. Each one gave him a piece of silver and each a ring of gold. Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters. And he called the name of the first Jemimah, the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-Happuch. In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. So Job died, old and full of days. Job 42:10-17
Job didn’t die prematurely living a life of defeat and poverty? He got back all that the devil had stolen from him and lived an additional one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. He died, old and full of days as well as rich and prosperous? And what God has done for Job, He can and will do for us because though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:3-4).
