Pride and Presumption

The LORD will destroy the house of the proud, But He will establish the boundary of the widow. Proverbs 15:25

Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished. Proverbs 16:5

God doesn’t exist for the sake of His people or His house but they exist to serve, obey and worship Him. Those who love the truth will discern what is true and those who are pure in heart will discern that which is pure. Those who are proud and arrogant don’t want to hear or know that truth because their mind is made up and they have their own agenda. In Numbers 14 the bible tells us the disobedient Children of Israel presumed to go up to the mountaintop to fight their enemies; nevertheless, neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed from the camp. As a result the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and attacked them, and drove them back as far as Hormah. In other words they were soundly defeated as many of God’s people are when they presume things to be true but have not heard it from the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus didn’t do anything unless His Father spoke to Him, told Him what to do and what words to say! Hence He had no problem to move on to another town and leave a great revival meeting. The bible records:

At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. And the whole city was gathered together at the door.  Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.  And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him. When they found Him, they said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You." But He said to them, "Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth." Mark 1:32-38

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.  "But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. "The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. John 10:11-13

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:5-8

All true shepherds are like David and Jesus they are not hirelings who seek their own place or position but they lay down their lives for the sheep. And they are fearless against the enemy and pure in their worship before the Lord for they serve only the Lord !Jesus wasn’t concerned about making himself a reputation but took the form of a bondservant and coming in the likeness of men did the will of the Father, just like every true disciple of Jesus is supposed to do. Obedience to God is the hallmark of a Christian and not the size of his ministry or house or the abundance of the things he possesses. God’s word is unchanging:

And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."   Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.  "And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?'  "So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.  'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry." '  "But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'  "So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." Luke 12:15-21

"how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Acts 10:38

Yes, we are to lay up our treasures in heaven and seek the best good of others and not be concerned solely about me, myself and I! Yes, we are to seek the anointing and power that Jesus had so that we can go about doing good and healing all who are oppressed by the devil, for God is with us. We are to search the bible and check with the Holy Spirit to see that everything that was taught to us or have learned from others is truly from God! We are not to presume anything or it might be our downfall! We are not to be ignorant concerning spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1). We are to pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, especially that we may prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1) and we are not to let our pride stand in the way of receiving and doing all that God has for us!

We must not only believe in the Holy Spirit but make room for Him in our lives. He must the president of our lives and not just resident. We must know Him better than we know anyone else for He is our Helper, Counselor, Guide, Friend and Teacher! We must allow the presence and power of God overshadow us and be with us in everything that we do! As the angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you.” God’s word is unchanging:

So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tabernacle.  Then the LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again.

But two men had remained in the camp: the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them. Now they were among those listed, but who had not gone out to the tabernacle; yet they prophesied in the camp.  And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, "Moses my lord, forbid them!"  Then Moses said to him, "Are you zealous for my sake? Oh, that all the LORD'S people were prophets and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!" Numbers 11:24-29

If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.  But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.  Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.  Let all things be done decently and in order. 1 Corinthians 14:37-40
