DOING GOOD

Beyond All Measure

For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west,  So far has He removed our transgressions from us.  As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103:11-14

One of the great truths of the word of God is that:

The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy. Psalm 147:11

Another great truth is that:

For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations. Psalm 100:5

And another great truth is that:

No king is saved by the multitude of an army; A mighty man is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a vain hope for safety; Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.  For our heart shall rejoice in Him, Because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us, Just as we hope in You. Psalm 33:16-22

Yes, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.  He is their help and their shield, as well as their exceeding great reward.  He redeems their life from destruction and crowns them with lovingkindness and tender mercies.

The tender mercies and lovingkindnesses of the Lord towards His trusting are never failing and they are better than life.  The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant. His word is unchanging:

Blessed be the LORD my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle- My lovingkindness and my fortress,  My high tower and my deliverer, My shield and the One in whom I take refuge,  Who subdues my people under me.

LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him? Man is like a breath;  His days are like a passing shadow. Psalm 144:1-4

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the LORD his God,  Who made heaven and earth, The sea, and all that is in them;  Who keeps truth forever,  Who executes justice for the oppressed,   Who gives food to the hungry.

The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners.  The LORD opens the eyes of the blind;  The LORD raises those who are bowed down;  The LORD loves the righteous.  The LORD watches over the strangers; He relieves the fatherless and widow; But the way of the wicked He turns upside down. Psalm 146:6-9

There is no one who can do what the Lord can do, including giving freedom to the prisoners and opening the eyes of the blind.  He who keeps truth forever executes justice for the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.  His word is true:

Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!  Bless the LORD, O my soul,  And forget not all His benefits:  Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,  Who redeems your life from destruction,  Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,  Who satisfies your mouth with good things,  So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.   The LORD executes righteousness  And justice for all who are oppressed. Psalm 103:1-6

As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.  For the wind passes over it, and it is gone,  And its place remembers it no more.  But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting  On those who fear Him,  And His righteousness to children's children, To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them.

The LORD has established His throne in heaven,  And His kingdom rules over all. Psalm 103:15-19

Yes, the LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all. Yes, the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children's children, to such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them.

But those who have received God’s mercies and lovingkindness have a responsibility to give it to others. Otherwise they will find themselves in places they never expected to be. For God’s word is true:

Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"

Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

"Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.   "And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.  "But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made.

"The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, 'Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.'

"Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.

"But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me what you owe!'

"So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.'

"And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt.

"So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done.

"Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.  'Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?'

"And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.

"So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses."  Matthew 18:21-35
