Great Is Our Lord
Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful. The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. The LORD lifts up the humble; He casts the wicked down to the ground. Psalm 147:1-6
"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified." And because Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever including the Compassionate LORD, He proclaims liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; proclaims the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; comforts all who mourn, consoles those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified. So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves. But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things. Mark 6:32-36
Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there. Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus' feet, and He healed them. So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way." Matthew 15:29-32
The Lord Jesus Christ is a God of compassion. When He lived on this earth, He was moved with compassion on seeing the sick and the demon possessed and did a miracle for them. And because of His compassion Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion on the multitude because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way. But His disciples said to Him, "Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?" However Jesus already knew what He was going to do and said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven, and a few little fish." So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
Jesus compassion was not only for the souls and spirit but also for their bodies. And a result He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left. And it’s God’s compassion that causes God to work miracles in our lives including healing broken hearts and lives!
Many circumstances in life do break our hearts and cause us great pain and agony. God caused Jesus Christ to traverse the path of suffering in this world. He was ridiculed by the High priest and others. He went through much shame to understand our agony. So, when we pour out our hearts to Him, He will comfort and heal our broken hearts. And then He will use us as an instrument to carry His comfort and see the broken hearted healed. God’s word is true:

Yes, the Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit (Psalm 34:18). Jesus Christ was broken to understand our pain and agony. He gave Himself on the cross for us. He is waiting to comfort our broken hearts. Let us take our burdens and sorrows to Him. He will understand and comfort our broken hearts.
Many times we face circumstances that shatter our hearts and lament over them. But we have a Compassionate God Who is there to comfort and console our broken hearts. And He wants to use us as a channel to bring comfort and to carry His love and power to the broken hearted people! His word is true:
“So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes…..” Matthew 20:34.
And Jesus, moved with compassion, put out His hand and touched him (Leper), and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed” Mark 1:41.
It is also the will of God that we should be well in life and be in perfect health. When we seek God, He promises, “I will take sickness away from the midst of you” (Exodus 23:25). Sickness is a weapon of the devil to turn us away from God and to make us suffer in health. But Jesus Christ was born into this world to destroy the works of the devil. The Bible says, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (Acts 10:38). And Lord Jesus Christ loves healing the sick. When we seek the Lord, He shall heal us from sickness and fill us with peace. His word is unchanging:
“The Lord will strengthen him on the bed of his illness; he will sustain him on his sick bed” Psalm 41:3
The Bible says in Ephesians 4:7,8, "But to each one of us, grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore the Bible says, When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men." The Bible also says, "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him" (Acts 10:38). He healed sickness of every kind. The grace, which the Holy Spirit offers, is freely given to all. When we, through that grace, heal people and grant them the power to heal, we do the will of God.
The Bible says, “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love (1 Corinthians 13:4-8, 13).
And the Lord Jesus Christ wants us to be loving and compassionate toward others in this world. He illustrates it in a parable as, “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him and went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, “Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you” (Luke 10:30-35).
In this parable, we see that the traveler was beaten up by a gang of thieves and was abandoned on the road half-dead. Many people passed by him including a priest who did not care to help him. But a Samaritan, an ordinary man took compassion on the traveler when he (Samaritan) passed the wounded man that way. Because of his compassion, he attended to the wounded man. In his compassion the Samaritan took the wounded man on his animal to an inn and paid the inn keeper to take care of him till he got well.
When we are compassionate toward others, people will come to know of the compassion of God. The Lord Who is watching us from Heaven will be very pleased with us and shall be more compassionate toward us. The compassion of the Lord will also open the way to miracles in our lives. The Bible also says: “Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:22, 23).
It is very true that because of His mercies we are not consumed. As His mercies are new every morning, we should seek the Lord in prayer early morning. In life we may face problems and sufferings which we might long to get rid of them. Not knowing the path, we may wander in darkness. But the Bible exhorts us to put our total trust on the Lord alone. There are many promises of God which we could use them against our problems. We must claim the promise of God and pray. When we use the promise of God against our problems, His word will subdue the problems and our own eyes will behold the miracle.
The Bible says about Mary, "Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord" (Luke 1:45). That is the trust that righteous people have. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry. Trials do come in the lives of righteous people, but the Lord will deliver the righteous when they cry out to Him. God’s word is unchanging:
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, And those who hate the righteous shall be condemned. The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned. Psalm 34:17-22
