REBUKE

Rebuke Them

For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.  One of them, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."  This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,  not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth. Titus 1:10-14

The American Heritage Dictionary defines rebuke and criticize as

re·buke v. re·buked, re·buk·ing, re·bukes. 1. To criticize or reprove sharply; reprimand. 2. To check or repress. --re·buke n. A sharp reproof.

crit·i·cize v. crit·i·cized, crit·i·ciz·ing, crit·i·ciz·es. --tr. 1. To find fault with. 2. To judge the merits and faults of; analyze and evaluate. --intr. To act as a critic. --crit“i·ciz”a·ble adj. --crit“i·ciz”er n

Now to criticize, find fault with, judge the merits and faults of, or analyze and evaluate a person in a harsh or biting tone or character is something that many religious ones who call themselves Christians would find fault with. But apostle Paul instructed Titus and gave us a pattern  that many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain must be rebuked sharply. Rebuke was part of the calling of a true man of God according to Apostle Paul who stated:

Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers,  1 Timothy 5:1

Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear. 1 Timothy 5:20

Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. Titus 2:15

Nobody likes to be rebuked especially publicly and especially when many who have rebuked others have been themselves wrong and hypocritical? But nevertheless according to the Word of God there is a place to rebuke those who are wrong, those who are in error, and those who are deceivers! God’s word is unchanging:

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:  Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;  and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.  But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 2 Timothy 4:1-5

For the foolish person will speak foolishness,  And his heart will work iniquity: To practice ungodliness,  To utter error against the LORD,  To keep the hungry unsatisfied,  And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.  Also the schemes of the schemer are evil; He devises wicked plans  To destroy the poor with lying words,  Even when the needy speaks justice.  But a generous man devises generous things,  And by generosity he shall stand. Isaiah 32:5-6

Yes, we are to preach the word, convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching in season and out of season for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.  For this purpose God He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,  till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;  that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,  but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head-Christ-  from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. (Ephesians 4:11-16)

Now ‘sound doctrine’ is definitely not taught in seminaries or bible schools by men who live and walk in the flesh devoid of the mind of Christ but by the Holy Spirit. He alone is the Spirit of Truth, Guide, and Teacher who leads all men into truth. God’s word is unchanging:

But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,  Nor have entered into the heart of man  The things which God has prepared for those who love Him."  But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.  For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.  These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.  But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.  For "who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:11-16

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 1 John 2:20

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1 John 2:27

Those who reject the place and position in the Church of Jesus Christ of Apostles and prophets and the gifts of the Spirit, cannot ever say that they have the truth or be teachers of the truth for they deny what God doesn’t deny. They are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. But God’s word is unchanging:

And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:28

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.  And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

Remember signs, wonders and miracles follow believers not unbelievers.

MARK 16:14    Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
15    And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
16    He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
17    And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
18    they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
19    So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
20    And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen
